
Rosemary Paetow, CPA
I began my career as a scientist, earning my degree in Biochemistry from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. I worked on research to cure Multiple Sclerosis. Later, I went back to school to earn my accounting degree and obtained my CPA from KPMG. After 15 years in the finance world I decided to try my hand at being an entrepreneur. I successfully managed a mid-sized accounting software consulting firm for 9 years. Now, I train CEO’s to become better leaders, to make better decisions so as to produce better results. Everyday, I use the skills I attained as a scientist, CPA and CEO (the logic skills of analysis, strategic and systems thinking) to understand business with the soft skills of emotional intelligence (self-awareness) to understand how to motivate leaders running those businesses. I bring a strong financial as well as organizational (OD) understanding to my clients.
As an executive advisor to CEO’s I understand some of the challenges facing CEO’s: from defining the business issues correctly, to identifying when to hire & who to hire (skills vs. potential), to reading the market correctly (when to take a risk and when to hold back), to identifying the areas of risk in the business (those hidden things that will trip up our progress, our success). I have faced the same sorts of things. I have had to make some tough decisions. And I know what happens when we don’t act at the right time – or worse when we haven’t set ourselves to take advantage of a market correction. I have the tools (logic and soft skills) to take a company from where they are to where they want to be because I get into a CEO’s head and find out what untapped creative genius lies back there and how to use it more effectively in the business of managing people and making money.

On a more practical note, I developed a P & L on each attorney, at the urging of Rosemary, to show the bottom line contribution of each attorney within the firm. We then used that document to have discussions with each attorney about their contribution to the firm at review time and bonus time. Results: eliminated 2 low performers and increased the effectiveness of the remaining team members. My Group also assisted me in analyzing where and when to move my offices.
